Here we have the curved angle that joins
the sides and coal aprons to the front bulkheads. Curving angle
is always a fiddle. Here it is being formed with the help of
a steel die. This same die was used to form the ribs. First you
must anneal the brass by heating it to a dull red heat and then
quenching in cold water. Then onto the die and start forming
it with a rawhide mallet.
When you work the brass it will begin
to harden. These parts were annealed three times before they
snuggled up to the die the way I wanted. Then they went into
the acid pot to remove the oxides that formed in the annealing
process. Lastly they were polished up with some red Scotch Brite.
Then begins the drilling and fitting up with Clecos. After you
get all the holes drilled you must disassemble the parts, de
bur and clean between them. If you don't, you will get chips
between the pieces and when you rivet them you will have lumpy
sheet metal.
